These are stories of hope and learning going on in selected children in Basic 7 (Junior High School – JHS 1) of the Bishop’s Girls’ School, in the Central Business District in Accra. Apart from Mirabel and Brenda who live at Chorkor, the other four girls, Angel, Christiana, Comfort and Victoria live in the James Town community.
Angel Quarcoo is a thirteen-year-old girl from Abola but lives at Nmaamonaa with her 66-year-old grandmother. Both communities are in James Town. Angel’s grandmother, Madam Rose Laryea sells fish to enable her to take care of her. Her mother is deceased and her father does not live with them.
Angel is a very diligent student who likes science and would love to be a medical doctor. She enjoys jollof rice with chicken and her favourite colour is blue.
Brenda Ofoli comes from Teshie but lives at Chorkor with her mother, grandmother and three siblings. Her mother Getrude is a teacher and the breadwinner for the family because her father is deceased.
Brenda is thirteen years and her favourite subject is her local language – Ga though she would like to be a medical doctor in future. The food she likes best is fried plantain with palava (spinach) sauce.
Christiana Tetteh lives with her grandmother, Madam Mary Vanderpuije because both parents are deceased. She is twelve years old and a very hardworking student. Christiana loves mathematics and would love to be a banker in future. She loves banku and okro stew with beef to bits and can eat it every day of her life. She enjoys playing ampe which is close to hopscotch, reading and learning.
Comfort Abbey comes from Asere near Bannerman Road also in the James Town community. She lives with both parents and two younger siblings. Her mother is a trader and a father, a plumber. Although she likes reading and dancing, she enjoys solving mathematical problems and would like to be a banker in future. She loves fufu and light soup with chicken wings.
Mirabel’s mother, Madam Dorcas Laryea is a fishmonger and her father, Joseph Boye is a fisherman. She has two sisters and a brother and they live together at Chorkor. Thirteen-year-old Mirabel Quao loves science as a subject and reading as a hobby. She will choose banku and okro stew over any food any day. She would love to be a midwife in future.
Twelve-year-old Victoria Ankrah always wear a beautiful smile which always draws her to people. She lives at Havana with her older sister and their mother, Theodora Amanshia Nunoo. Their father is deceased. She is eager to learn and be a responsible person in future. She loves reading and enjoys playing ludu.
