My Dream focuses on young intelligent high school girls, who because of acute financial challenges are stranded and cannot continue with their education.
Four young ladies are currently on our list; two have sponsors but two are still stranded.
Read along to learn more about these wonderful ladies.
Ellen
19-year-old Ellen lost her father just before she gained admission to St Monica Senior High School. Ellen, an intelligent, humble and determined young lady struggled to pay her fees.
We were introduced to Ellen in June, 2018 just when she was about to enter her final year in high school. Ellen’s calm ambition to excellently complete her senior high school and pursue a nursing career at the university enabled her defy all the gaping challenges to perform excellently in school.
We shared her story with potential sponsors, two of whom readily came to her aid. She successfully passed her WASSCE and is currently being sponsored as a first-year student at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, College of Health Sciences, University of Ghana, Legon.
Sirina
18-year-old Sirina is the fourth in a family of nine; the second girl out of five girls and the first to defy all odds and go to school.
Her parents and two brothers are farmers. Three of her four sisters are female market porters, popularly known in our local parlance as ‘kayayei’.
We met Sirina at the Mallam Atta Market, Accra in July 2019. We were impressed with her neatness and composure as she went about her work as a female porter.
She paid her own fees from class one through to the Senior High School by working as a female market porter on holidays. Sirina’s dream of becoming a nurse seemed to be waning because not only did she not perform creditably at the 2019 West Africa Secondary School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) but moving on, she may not be able to pay her fees either at the University or the Training College with her meagre earnings as a female market porter.
By the grace of God, we were able to find a sponsor for Sirina. Through this sponsor’s benevolence, she is currently in school at Business College International, Tamale and preparing to re-write her examinations so she could pursue her career either at the University or a Training College. We are constantly monitoring her progress and providing her with educational materials.
Emelia
Hardworking, intelligent and eloquent Emelia, is a product of a broken home with two other sisters who have been abandoned by their father. Her mother, a petty trader, lives from hand to mouth.
Emelia had been asked by her school authorities to either pay her outstanding first year, first and second term accommodation and feeding fees or would be sacked from her hostel. Emelia wrote a letter to her headmistress, explaining why her mother could not afford to pay her fees immediately and requesting to be given time to settle it.
We have been supporting Emelia for the past two years from our meagre resources. She is about to write her final examinations to pursue a career in law.
Emelia NEEDS a sponsor!!!
Afushetu
Afushetu is also a female market porter at the Mallam Atta market who attended Tolon Senior High School. Afushetu did not perform creditably at the 2019 WASSCE to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher.
This soft-spoken young lady is appealing to potential sponsors to help her rewrite the WASSCE in order to fulfill her dream of becoming a teacher.
