I MADE IT is a programme that provides mentoring and grooming to girls from the Senior High School (SHS) level through the tertiary level, till they begin their careers.
In 2017, Smile for Child, Ghana was able to launch this program at St Monica Senior High School, Asante-Mampong. In collaboration with the school’s management body, nine first year, needy but intelligent students were selected to participate in the pilot phase of this programme. We have since carried out the following:
Character Building - Weekly sessions on core values needful for excellent behaviors such as, to be reliable, resilient, resourceful and responsible.
General Knowledge - Reading assignments when on vacation with periodic tests. They have so far read Animal Farm by George Orwell, The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born by Ayi Kwei Armah, The Bride Price by Buchi Emecheta and Entertainment Night by Lawrence Darmani.
Educational Trips: In February, 2019, the girls embarked on an educational trip to Accra, Cape-Coast, Elmina and Akosombo.
Community Service Projects: Since November 2019, the girls have been serving their community by championing a plastic waste recycling project in their school. They collect plastic waste around the school and package them weekly to be sold to recycling companies. The money realized would then be used to manage organic waste in the school.
These 9 girls are now in their final years in high school getting ready to enter universities or tertiary institutions of their choice. To help ease this transition, we intend on organizing an event to celebrate the efforts and sacrifices made by all individuals who participated in our three-year long programme.
Each of the nine girls will receive a certificate honouring their participation in community work.
Each student will receive a laptop to enhance their studies in the future.
Honour the most outstanding of the nine with a phone.
Appreciate staff who have been supportive in all the programmes.
Appreciate some SMOSA Asante-Mampong members who have been very supportive.
Future
Due to the double track system in the school, we have with the support of the school authorities selected 10 girls from each track making them 20. They will undergo the mentoring and grooming sessions as the current girls move into their new phases of life.
