In December 2021, Smile for Child Ghana (SFCG) received life-changing news—Judith and Mabel had gained admission to Ashesi University. The moment was filled with joy, disbelief, and celebration. Calls were made, tears were shed, and hope was renewed.
Both students were admitted under the Mastercard Scholars Programme, which fully covered their tuition, accommodation, and living expenses. This allowed them to focus entirely on their academic and personal growth.
Their journey was not without challenges. Adjusting to the high academic standards at Ashesi required resilience and determination. Through perseverance, both students excelled.

In 2025:
Judith graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.
Mabel graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems.
Today, they are giving back:
Judith teaches English and Social Studies at Berekuso Basic School.
Mabel works with the Communication and Marketing Department at the Ashesi Centre for Entrepreneurship.
They are proud members of the second cohort of SFCG’s I MADE IT programme from St. Monica’s Senior High School.
Vanessa's Story
Ashesi University has impacted me in more ways than I anticipated. Each semester, I
have become increasingly intentional around growth, leadership, and service. I have
realised that progress is not only through large accomplishments; but also, by
consistently showing up, challenging myself, and stepping into places where I can make
a difference.
Two of the most meaningful experiences for me have been a volunteer work as an
Ashesi Success Co-Facilitator (twice). A Co-Facilitator allowed me to assist fellow
students and myself in various sessions designed to help us succeed academically, and
develop our self-confidence. This process has enlightened me that leadership is not
only being seen, but also helping others on the quiet to be successful.

I took the challenge of running for Ashesi Student Council President, I did not win the
election, but the experience has impacted my life. I have learnt that resilience, and the
need to stand up for something larger than yourself are values to pursue. I have also
learned more about student governance and developed a clearer understanding of what
it means to be a member of a highest student body.
Outside of my university environment, I have tried to gain professional experience and
create an expanded outlook. I attended the National Scholars Convening 2025 hosted
by Mastercard at The Lancaster Hotel and the World Bank Career Fair Conference at
The Kempinski Hotel.
Each experience has opened doors to creative ideas, meaningful
conversations, and other contacts who have helped me develop my limited view of
leadership, development, and the possibilities of different careers.
Additionally, my passion for helping others has grown significantly during this period. I
advanced from being a Peer Counsellor to a Peer Coach within Ashesi’s Counselling
Unit, where I took on greater responsibilities supporting students through personal and
academic challenges. I also serve as a School Buddy for first-year students, helping
them transition into university life and making them feel welcome, supported, and
confident.
When I look back, I am proud of how much I have grown. The experiences I’ve had
have helped to enhance my leadership skills and deepen my commitment to service,
mentoring, and my goal of being an intentional leader who makes a difference wherever
I am placed.

third year at various universities in the country. She is a Business Administration
student at Ashesi University)
